overview

AFOI offers video visitation in partnership with the Virginia Department of Corrections. All major institutions in Virginia are served from 8 Visitor Centers throughout the state, including Alexandria, Bristol, Charlottesville, Fredericksburg, Mechanicsville, Norfolk, Richmond, and Roanoke. Please note that Petersburg is currently closed.

what should i do on date of visit?

1. Arrive at the location at least 15 minutes before your scheduled video visit. Bring your current photo ID, your AFOI Visitor ID Card and the IDs of anyone approved to visit with you.
2. All visitors are required to wear a mask both before and after your video visit.

3. Staff and/or volunteers will be there to greet you, check your ID(s) and review COVID screening questions. Each individual adult, and adults for minors, will need to sign a service waiver if you have not completed one previously.

4. At your scheduled visit time, staff and/or volunteers will check you in and start the video visitation session.

HOW TO REGISTER TO VISIT AT AN AFOI VISITOR CENTER

1. Obtain visitor approvals for each visitor with the Virginia Department of Corrections.

2. Complete a video visitation application by downloading one here (see above), completing one online here (see above), or contacting AFOI.

3. Fill out your portion completely (with required signatures). There is a limit of four (4) approved visitors for a visit; this number includes children.

4. Once the visitation application is complete, send it to AFOI by mail or by e-mail as an attachment to family@afoi.org. If you completed and signed it online, there is no need to email or mail it to us.

5. AFOI requires a minimum of two weeks to process new paperwork. Once the paperwork is approved by VADOC, applicants will be contacted to complete a registration and intake over the phone and are issued a Visitor Identification (V#) number.

6. Once you have been approved and completed your intake, register for a GTL Video Visitation account.

7. For your consideration ahead of time, the attached COVID Screening Questions will be asked when you arrive at the visitor center.
