Dating back to more than 50 years ago, research has consistently shown that maintaining the relationships between the incarcerated and their loved ones has benefits for everyone.
Studies have shown that incarcerated individuals with no visitation from loved ones are up to six times more likely to be re-incarcerated. Not only does visitation increase family bonds, but it also decreases recidivism and increases public safety.
AFOI is excited to announce that our flagship service, our Transportation Program, resumed in March, 2023. Recognizing changes to corrections, transportation and visitation post-pandemic, we want to highlight work by our partners - James River Transportation, Second Presbyterian Church Richmond and the Virginia Department of Corrections - in helping to support this restart for our organization and our families. Thank you all!
AFOI's Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) Transportation Initiative offers free transportation for the families of juveniles who are placed in correctional centers and detention centers from multiple bus stops throughout the Virginia. Through this innovative partnership with the DJJ, James River Transportation, and VanGo, this program removes barriers from families visiting their children.
AFOI offers two forms of video visitation: enhanced video visitation using at-home technology and video visitation from one of 8 visitor centers located throughout the state.
We are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to do this important work for those impacted by the incarceration of a loved one.
Each dollar donated helps us to provide programming that changes lives.
Thank you for believing in our mission.
